Working In Progress

The9-Yu Shuxin
Pink is playful, Pink is healthy, Pink is Powerful

by Trends Health

Having seen so many female celebrities appear on the cover of Fashion Health as ambassadors for the Pink Ribbon campaign, Yu Shuxin was thrilled to become a Pink Ribbon Lady herself this time. Witnessing a close friend battle breast cancer and undergo a mastectomy has made her even more determined to use her platform as an idol to inspire others. She hopes to encourage all women to prioritize breast health and learn to cherish their own bodies.

At another shoot for THE9’s Liu Yuxin, a soft, sweet, and slightly coy voice floated in before the person even appeared: “Hi baobei~” She greeted everyone cheerfully, and then finally entered — Yu Shuxin, dressed in a full black sporty outfit, exuding quiet confidence as she walked in. She politely greeted the photographer with a warm, “Hello, teacher!” Then, turning to Liu Yuxin, she playfully asked, “Did you miss me?” When she caught sight of Liu Yuxin’s outfit — a striking gold suit paired with a dramatic black cape — Shuxin immediately broke into her signature gasp:
“Wow! Total queen energy!” There’s no denying it — Yu Shuxin has a magnetic presence that’s impossible to ignore. The interview was just as refreshing. After some light banter, she dove into her recent work schedule: “I was sitting in this exact spot yesterday — but being interviewed by someone else. These days, I’ve been working non-stop: filming ads, magazine shoots, MVs, and all kinds of variety shows.” She picked up a printed A4 sheet with the interview outline and began answering the questions aloud — as if playfully interviewing herself.

When the Pink Cover Meets Reality

Becoming the new Pink Ribbon ambassador, Yu Shuxin couldn’t be happier. “I’ve been following the Pink Ribbon campaign for many years. I used to read Fashion Health and see all these female celebrities doing full nude shoots for the cause. I never imagined I’d one day take on that role myself—it’s honestly such a joy to now be one of them.” Having debuted as an actress four years ago, and then again this year as a member of THE9, Yu Shuxin has truly stepped into the spotlight. Everything feels new and exciting to her—and what she enjoys most?

“Whenever fans post those absolutely stunning fan-taken photos of me, I get so happy. I even save them and share them on my Moments (WeChat feed).”

Now in the center of fame and public attention, her experience of “being popular” feels more real than ever.

“It feels like everyone genuinely cares about me and looks out for me. Even the staff around me are always nervous that I’ll say the wrong thing, because one careless sentence from me could blow up online. A lot of brands have started sending me gifts, and my Weibo comments and reposts have skyrocketed. That’s when it really hits—it feels tangible.”

In fact, this has always been Yu Shuxin ’s signature style. Four years ago, on the reality show Grade One: University Season, she was nicknamed “Miss Mudslide” by actor Chen Jianbin—not because of her looks, but because of her personality. On the show, she had a chaotic, unpredictable energy—at times a bit willful or dramatic, occasionally playful banters others, yet still charming in her own way. Beneath it all, she was kind-hearted. That same playful, over-the-top energy carried over to the stage of Youth With You 2, where she gained even wider attention. There, she earned a new title: “Drama Queen” (小作精)—a nickname that stood out sharply from the usual polished image of most idols. She was real, unfiltered, and refreshingly different. But how does she strike that delicate balance—being dramatic without becoming off-putting?

“My drama is just how I naturally am,” she explains.
“I know I can be a bit extra, a bit theatrical, kind of playful—but I’m not dramatic toward other people. I’m not hard to work with or anything. If I ever come across that way, it’s only because I have high standards for my work.”

When asked about her most unforgettable memory from Youth With You 2, Yu Shuxin fondly recalls the time spent in Changlong (Chimelong), during lockdown. The trainees would gather on the balcony to soak up the sun.

“By then, I had already been working for three or four years. It had been so long since I’d experienced anything close to campus life. That period really gave me a taste of what it feels like to be in college again.”

She and her teammates would check temperatures, sunbathe, line up for meals, play Werewolf (a social deduction game), and even do each other’s makeup.

And then there were the dance practices with Lisa.

“I remember it so clearly. I asked Lisa, ‘When will we see each other again?’
She said, ‘Next week.’
But because of the pandemic, four months passed… and I still haven’t seen her in person.”

These days,Yu Shuxin ’s schedule is packed to the brim, sometimes doing two shoots in a single day. Her favorite way to reward herself? A good meal. She’s also just like a little girl when it comes to the small perks of being a celebrity. For example, not long ago when she visited Li Jiaqi’s livestream studio, what made her happiest was receiving a giant bag of snacks.

Yu Shuxin Definitely Has What It Takes

Some people say Yu Shuxin could’ve easily just lived like a little princess, but instead, she chose to work hard for her dreams—becoming, in the eyes of many, an inspiring figure. But Esther doesn’t see herself as a “princess” at all.

“Anyone who really knows me will realize I’m not some spoiled little princess.
Maybe when it comes to shopping, my dad used to give me a bit more allowance—that’s true.
But in real life, I’m not pampered at all.
I’ve said it in interviews before—girls should be financially independent.
When you’ve built something for yourself in your career, that’s when people will respect you.”

Born into a business family, Yu Shuxin’s childhood dream was to become a female CEO. She loved the feeling of running things and being in control. Before debuting as an entertainer, she even helped her family with business negotiations.

At age 20, her dream changed. She wanted to become an entertainer. Acting felt interesting to her—something worth trying.

At first, when she only had small roles, it didn’t seem difficult. But when she started playing lead characters and had to portray experiences she hadn’t lived through herself, she quickly realized: it’s not that simple.

In My Amazing Boyfriend 2, she played Tian Jingzhi—a character whose personality was similar to hers, but whose life experiences were not.

“She gets pregnant in the show.
Some scenes were incredibly tough.
I’ve talked about that fake baby kicking scene so many times—it was really hard to pull off.”

Yu Shuxin’s approach? Do her homework thoroughly. But when it comes to the actual acting, she says it’s not just about technique:

“You have to carry all the emotional weight that came before.
The audience needs to feel your excitement.
You have to figure out how to express that—naturally and believably—so that people watching can truly connect with what your character is feeling.”

In the recent drama Find Yourself, she played the adorable, kind-hearted, sharp-witted Cai Minmin. “She needed to return to something more pure and genuine—stripping away the mannerisms, acting techniques, and small ‘designs’ I used for Tian Jingzhi. The more innocent, the more simple-minded, the better—pure ‘sweet and silly.’”

Because of this drama, her character dynamic with David Wang Yaoqing—uncle and niece-in-law—became a running gag among fans. But during filming, the two hadn’t actually grown close. “I’m a Sagittarius—warm on the outside but reserved inside. I can be shy around people, so the first real bonding we had was actually after filming. It happened at a promo event. Uncle (David) invited us to dinner, and that’s when we finally hit it off.”

Later on, when Yu Shuxin appeared on the show The Sound, she found out Wang Yaoqing was on it too. “The producers told me I could call him ‘Uncle’ throughout the entire episode,” she laughed. “Ever since then, he started calling me ‘Guanguan’ too.”

Now four years into her career—transitioning from actress to idol—Yu Shuxin describes her pursuit of happiness as quite simple: “Making money and stuff is fine, but honestly, getting to wear different outfits every day, meeting different handsome guys—what girl wouldn’t dream of that?” Then she quickly catches herself and laughs,
“Wait—cut that part, I need to sound normal. I should say: it’s about having your own body of work.”

Lately, she’s been craving a role like Gu Jia from Nothing But Thirty. “I mean, I’m super assertive, okay?” She also wants to play Gu Li from Tiny Times.
“That role totally fits me! Just a few days ago, I was filming a group reality show with Guo Jingming, and he said he wants to reboot Tiny Times—and cast me as Gu Li.”

Looking ahead, Yu Shuxin hopes to become an artist who is truly respected. “Whether it’s in the idol world, the acting world, or the variety scene—I want people to respect me and see that I’ve got the chops. Ideally, I’ll shed the ‘idol’ label altogether and focus on acting.”

So does that mean she’s more focused on acting now? “Well, I’m self-aware enough to know I’m still new to the idol scene. Compared to others with years of foundational training, I can’t really compete.” Would she rather do film or TV? “Probably TV dramas. I mean, let’s be honest—I’m not at a level where I can carry a box office yet, right?”

Having traffic or popularity doesn’t mean you’ll be respected. Gaining respect is never easy. It’s not like fame, which sometimes feels random or even mystical.
Respect has to be earned—with sweat, effort, and persistence.

So how do you walk that path? “Of course, through your work. Not through brainless sweet rom-coms. I want my projects to have some depth.
Even if the character starts off silly and sweet, there should be a twist, some development. Ideally, the plot has subtle setups and satisfying payoffs—like in The Bad Kids (隐秘的角落). That’s the kind of layered storytelling I want to take on.”

Q&A
Using Idol Influence to Promote Breast Health

TH: How would you describe your own health?
Yu Shuxin: When I was a kid, I wasn’t very strong—I’d be the kind of person who would faint after running on the playground for just ten minutes. But things have gotten a lot better as I’ve grown up. After Youth With You 2, we all went for traditional Chinese medicine pulse readings, and mine actually ranked number one. The TCM doctor said my pulse was as strong as a 40-year-old man’s—like an ox! Maybe it’s all the training that helped.

TH: You’re eating very clean today. (Shuxin ordered a salad)
Yu Shuxin: I’m trying to lose weight. Do I look slim though? I may be bundled up now, but once the layers come off, I still feel kind of chubby.

TH: But your small face already gives you the upper hand!
Esther Yu: Today just happens to be a de-puffing day. I got up early to do my de-bloating routine. If you want to know the methods, check my Little Red Book—I drink Americanos, apply ice packs, use beauty devices to massage my face… all kinds of techniques.

TH: What healthy habits do you maintain? How do you care for your family’s health?
Yu Shuxin: I used to love soaking my feet, but now I don’t even have time for that. I still go for lymphatic detox treatments though. To take care of my family’s health, I’ll send them tasty treats or thoughtful gifts. I’ll also check in with them, saying things like “How’s your health these days?” and remind them to take care of themselves. I even tell my dad not to drink—but that’s still a work in progress.

TH: As a spokesperson for the “Pink Ribbon” campaign, what would you like to share with everyone?
Esther Yu: A friend of mine, who’s older than me, was diagnosed with breast cancer and had to have one side of her breast removed. That really made me more aware of how important health is. I hope everyone pays more attention—remind yourself, your family, and your friends to get regular check-ups.

TH: When it comes to supporting women, what do you think we can do? Any advice?
Yu Shuxin: Women should protect themselves, love themselves, and believe in themselves. And like I said earlier—work hard. If you can be financially independent, confident, and self-loving, people will naturally love and respect you too. Don’t worry.

TH: What pink clothes do you have in your wardrobe? What does the color pink mean to you?
Yu Shuxin: When I was little, I used to think pink was kind of childish. But as I got older, I realized there are so many different shades of pink, and girls really do look great in them. Some shades give off sweet princess vibes, while others can soften up a cool-toned outfit—it’s that trendy “sweet-but-cool” look. I really like pink now.
