Yu Shuxin: A Radiant Girl in Ocean Blue
by SUPER世界青年
2022-08-24 20:00
“What color do you think summer is?”
“Blue! The color of the ocean!”
“Why? Blue tends to feel a little melancholic, but summer doesn’t seem like a sad season.”
“Everyone experiences color differently, just like we all feel different emotions. When I see the blue sea, I feel calm and free. The ocean breeze makes me happy. Summer belongs to the sea, and blue belongs to summer.”
01
Blue-Tinted Summer Memories
Yu Shuxin has always loved the ocean. That vast blue expanse covering 70% of the Earth holds so many of her fondest memories. She can spend hours at sea without ever getting bored: “I can stay out there longer than most people. When I go deep-sea fishing, I can fish from morning till night—though I do get dizzy sometimes.”
Fishing has been a hobby of hers since childhood: “I started with shrimp. When I was really young, my grandma would take me to the park to catch shrimp. We didn’t have the best gear back then, but I just loved it.”
Later on, Yu Shuxin fell in love with the ocean—and with sea fishing, too: “I’m especially into lure fishing. It’s a method mainly used for sea fishing and totally different from stationary fishing by the riverside. With stationary fishing, you just drop the bait and sit there waiting. But with lure fishing, you actually have to keep reeling and moving the rod. My technique isn’t exactly textbook, but I really, really love it!” she explains enthusiastically—then pauses and chuckles softly, “Wait, when did I start giving a whole lesson on sea fishing?”
Back when she was still a student, summer was always the season Yu Shuxin looked forward to the most: “I used to be so excited for summer break—every single vacation, we’d go traveling somewhere.”
One of her most unforgettable summer trips was a spontaneous road trip with friends along the coast: “We were honestly amazing on that trip! We didn’t even book any hotels in advance—wherever we ended up, we’d just search for nearby homestays and check in on the spot. Isn’t that kind of magical?”
“I have this one friend who’s super timid and scared of everything. I said, ‘Let’s stay by the sea,’ and she was like, ‘What if there’s a tsunami?’ Then I said, ‘Okay, let’s stay near the mountains,’ and she goes, “No way, there could be a landslide!” Yu Shuxin recounts, mimicking her friend’s tone with vivid animation. “In the end, we ended up in this super remote mountain village. I said, ‘Now there are no tsunamis and no landslides, happy?’ But the next day, she told me she dreamed we were being chased by cannibals! ” Yu Shuxin has a gift for bringing stories to life. “Even though my friend was really over-the-top, that road trip to the coast was so much fun. Everything about it—from the food to the games—was amazing. The night markets by the sea had the best vibes. The food wasn’t anything extraordinary, to be honest, but the whole atmosphere was incredible—so many little games and lucky draws going on. It was just a great time.”
What made that trip so unforgettable, of course, had everything to do with Yu Shuxin’s favorite activity—fishing. “We caught so many prawns—those big tiger prawns—and grilled them right there. Catching them yourself and then cooking them—it was such a satisfying feeling.”
“Did you try biking?” “That’s a must at the beach.”
“I actually don’t know how to ride a bike—unless it has four wheels,” Yu Shuxin admits a bit sheepishly. “When we were filming A Romance of the Little Forest, there was a scene where I had to push a bike and then ride it. I was wearing a dress, and I got on from the back like this—and the whole crew burst out laughing. They were like, ‘Most people get on from the front!’”

“Just do whatever comes to mind! ”
Ever since Find Yourself made her a household name, Yu Shuxin’s schedule has grown increasingly hectic. The girl who used to fly off to the seaside whenever she had time off now has to settle for a quick fishing fix whenever she gets a rare break.
Even the carefree travel memories from her childhood now strike her as “a little wild in hindsight.”
“Work is so busy now—don’t you ever feel restricted? Like, wouldn’t it be nice to have a vacation like when you were a kid? ”
“Not at all,” Yu Shuxin replied firmly. “I’m doing things I truly enjoy. More importantly, a lot of this work feels like something I should be doing—something I want to do. So why would I feel restricted? This is what work is.”
When she was just starting out, Yu Shuxin sought out roles on her own, going from audition to audition, and practiced dancing relentlessly just for a chance to be on a variety show. Even after gaining popularity, she never let up on self-discipline. She’s deeply passionate about her profession—acting, singing and dancing, fashion, and beauty—and she handles every aspect of her work with care and precision. “I always say I don’t have high expectations for myself, but honestly… I probably do. Whatever I do, I need to meet my own standards. I have to feel that it’s okay before I put it out there. That way, no matter what I’m doing, people won’t feel like something’s off. They won’t think I’m on stage but lacking stage presence, or acting without really acting.”
In Yu Shuxin’s vocabulary, there’s no such thing as being passive. “I’m the type to just put my head down and get things done. If something comes to mind, I’ll actually go and do it, put it into action, and do it well—rather than just sitting around ‘thinking about it.’”
“Be a person of action, not just imagination”—this is advice Yu Shuxin once gave her fans, and it’s something she’s consistently lived by herself.
While others were still debating whether “C-entertainment lacks enough performance stages,” Yu Shuxin was already building one of her own. In June, she surprised fans who had been missing her stage presence by releasing a dance performance MV for Make It Hot. It’s a sultry, high-energy track—a striking contrast to her usual sweet and bubbly style. She trained for months for this one dance, even though the final video looks like it only took two days to shoot. “Because it’s supposed to look effortless,” Yu Shuxin laughed.
Allergic to sentimentality
Ever since she could remember, Yu Shuxin had always been the happiest kid in class.
“On my first day of kindergarten, all the other kids were crying. I was the only one sitting on the teacher’s lap giggling,” she recalls. She never experienced separation anxiety. Having lived in dorms from a young age, she learned to take good care of herself. “I’ve always been pretty content living away from home. From kindergarten all the way to university, it’s just been like that — I’m quite resilient.”
Even with a personality as radiant as summer, Yu Shuxin isn’t immune to moments of vulnerability. But she never lets those emotions linger. “Like, if I’m scrolling through the orange app and then switch to the red app the next second, I’ll already have forgotten what was bothering me,” she laughs. “That’s just how we Sagittariuses are—super forgetful. I don’t even remember why I argue with people sometimes. It’s always little things, like someone closing the door too quickly or not shutting it properly. Really minor stuff. I get annoyed, and then I forget—it doesn’t actually affect my mood.”
“Are you kind of allergic to sentimentality? It feels like you rarely share your struggles with the outside world.”
“There’s really nothing worth sharing,” Yu Shuxin replies. “I don’t even think what I go through is all that hard. Sure, I’ll have natural emotional reactions, but I don’t think it’s necessary to get overly sentimental.” She pauses, then adds, “Sentimentality—is it meant to make others feel sorry for you? I don’t need that kind of sympathy. What I hope is that when people see me, they feel happy. That they think I’m strong and joyful.”
“When it comes to happiness, you’ve mentioned before that you hope to always be happy, genuine, and free. Do you feel like you’ve achieved that now? ”
“I have,” she answers without the slightest hesitation.
Q&A
SUPER世界青年: Pick a theme song for August?
Yu Shuxin: Of course, it has to be “Amnesia,” the OST from Love Between Fairy and Devil—sung by me!
SUPER世界青年: The happiest moment recently?
Yu Shuxin: There are way too many! I was really happy dubbing for My Little Pony, and I’m also super happy that Love Between Fairy and Devil is about to air. Even just posting pretty photos makes me happy—there’s just so much to be happy about!
SUPER世界青年: How did it feel dubbing for My Little Pony?
Yu Shuxin: It was so hard! It sounds easy, but it was actually really tough—honestly, I even felt like it was a bit beyond my abilities. But I gave it my all and got it done. When I got home after the recording, I genuinely felt like I was amazing. I had such a strong sense of accomplishment!
SUPER世界青年: You’ve done so many interviews—if the roles were reversed and you were Yu Shuxin: the one interviewing someone else, what would you most want to ask?
I actually wrote down a bunch of questions I wanted to ask in my Notes app—whenever something came to mind, I’d jot it down. But now that you’re asking me, I can’t remember any of them, haha.
SUPER世界青年: Can you recommend a workout for slimming down?
Yu Shuxin: Right now I’m doing Pamela Reif workouts and Ballerina Beauty. They’re really tiring, but I still make myself do them—they’re super effective.
