More Sweet Than Sweet—The9 Yu Shuxin

In the heat of a sweltering Shanghai day, Yu Shuxin sits across from you in a blue floral dress and white sneakers—fresh, relaxed, and effortlessly charming. Her voice carries a slightly coquettish, playful tone as she chats. She said, I’ve been through a lot, but I have a terrible memory—I’ve forgotten most of it. What I always remember are the good things.” Yu Shuxin, ever open-hearted, knows exactly what she wants. To her, there’s something deeply romantic about pursuing and devoting yourself to the things you truly love. After all, people don’t find meaning only through results. Still, here’s hoping that the sweet and sincere Yu Shuxin, just like in the lyrics she sings, “faces every twist and turn — and clears every level with ease.”

Q&A

OK! Magazine: Since the start of Youth With You 2 and debuting as a group, what changes have you gone through?
THE9 –Yu Shuxin: Ah, someone actually just asked me this yesterday. Honestly, I don’t think I’ve changed much—really. I’ve always been in a pretty calm state, even during the competition. I mean, I wasn’t super famous before, but my schedule was already packed with work. So I had long been mentally prepared for a full workload, haha.

OK! Magazine: In the styling for your group EP SphinX Myst3ry, what was a highlight you personally liked?
THE9 –Yu Shuxin: There were two outfits in total—one had a more modern vibe, and the other was quite special, with a deeper meaning behind it… I’ll leave that as a surprise for now! The song itself is super explosive—it’s a style that’s pretty rare for girl groups in China.

OK! Magazine: Most of the time, we see you as someone who lights up the room — cheerful, lively, and carefree. Many people admire your free-spirited and easygoing nature. What shaped this personality of yours?
THE9 –Yu Shuxin: I used to think I was just born this way. But later, a lot of people told me it probably has to do with the environment my parents created—really positive and upbeat. I’m also a Sagittarius, which means I’m naturally optimistic and get happy really easily!

OK! Magazine: So you only realized this after hearing other people’s analysis?
THE9 –Yu Shuxin: Yeah, I’m honestly just super chill. I always thought I was simply born to be happier than most people, and not so easily affected by things. But then others pointed out that it’s probably because I was raised in such a relaxed, open household. And it’s true—my parents were pretty hands-off. Like, I never went to cram school as a kid. So I ended up being really carefree and never overthinking anything.

OK! Magazine: But your schedule has been getting busier—it’s only natural to have some low moments. How do you deal with negative emotions?
THE9 –Yu Shuxin: Honestly, I really don’t have much negative emotion! Haha, I mean it! But I guess some situations could lead to negativity—like working for too long, and then my face starts to look “tired,” and I don’t look great on camera. When it comes to work—even comments online—I rarely feel upset. Even if I see one or two not-so-friendly comments, my reaction is usually just, “Ah? Why would someone say that? ” and then I forget about it!

OK! Magazine: You’re known for being pretty direct online.
THE9 –Yu Shuxin:Yeah, I just say what I want to say and then move on to the next thing. I’ve said my piece—but however others choose to interpret it, that’s out of my hands. So I don’t dwell on it!

OK! Magazine: There’s a lot of hard work behind this job. What is it that draws you to it?
THE9 –Yu Shuxin: This job lets me try on the latest fashion and bags, attend launches, and look beautiful every day—of course that’s something many girls dream of! But beyond that, I get to switch between so many different roles—one moment I’m on stage, the next I’m acting, then releasing songs, or doing variety shows. It’s really fun. I’m a Sagittarius, and I love trying new things. Especially every time new content or footage comes out, I just feel like all the hard work was totally worth it!

OK! Magazine: You mentioned taking on different roles—which one do you like the most?
THE9 –Yu Shuxin: Honestly, I like them all! I try my best at each one. As for how far I can go or how well I’ll do… I really don’t know yet.

OK! Magazine: You often share your outfits on social media—can you share some of your fashion tips with us?
THE9 –Yu Shuxin: Sure! First, it’s all about color coordination—don’t mix too many colors in one outfit. For example, if I’m wearing something blue, I’ll choose accessories in similar tones or go for contrasting shades like pink or bright red—those look great too. Also, don’t go too over the top—don’t pile on every trend or element all at once. Oh, and if your outfit is already colorful or eye-catching, go with a more natural makeup look. But if you’re wearing something simple or minimal, like all black, you can use accessories to make it pop.

OK! Magazine: Is the dress you’re wearing today something you picked out yourself?
THE9 –Yu Shuxin: Yes! I like switching up my style. Maybe today I look more like a sweet girl, tomorrow something cooler, and the day after that, maybe more feminine. I don’t like to define my style too strictly—though overall, I’d say it leans a little on the sweet side

OK! Magazine: Have you watched any TV dramas or movies you liked recently?
THE9 –Yu Shuxin: Nothing But Thirty! Everyone’s watching it! And also Alive, the zombie one. Though honestly… I haven’t had much time to watch anything (whispers).

OK! Magazine: No time to travel these days, right? You seem like someone who really loves traveling.
THE9 –Yu Shuxin: Not at all—I haven’t traveled at all this year, and we can’t go abroad anyway. I love traveling. Back when I was filming dramas, I’d hop on a plane the moment we wrapped to go overseas and travel.

OK! Magazine: What do you enjoy most when traveling?
THE9 –Yu Shuxin: Deep-sea fishing! I love zoning out on the open sea—it’s super relaxing and peaceful. Plus, fishing really teaches you patience.
(OK!: That’s pretty rare—not many young women are into sea fishing!)
Haha, yeah, I guess I’m a bit unconventional like that!

OK! Magazine: It’s already the second half of 2020. Any plans for your work ahead?
THE9 –Yu Shuxin: I really hope to land a good acting role. Fingers crossed—I’d love to have a drama out next year for everyone to see!

ARTICLE – PHYSICAL MAGAZINE FORMAT

Yu Shuxin is no newcomer.
She’s already impressed with her standout performance as the memorable Cai Minmin, and her expressive reactions have gone viral across social media in the form of memes. But now, as a member of THE9, what kind of path lies ahead for this so-called “rookie” Yu Shuxin?

“I’ve been through a lot of hardship, but I have a terrible memory—I’ve forgotten most of it. What I always remember is the good.”

The day this article was written happened to coincide with the release of THE9’s debut EP, Sphinx X Mystery.
Yu Shuxin had already “warned” us that this track would be explosive, and sure enough, it’s the kind of song that makes you want to sway along the moment it starts playing as background music.

Accompanying her unmistakably sweet and distinctive vocals is the scene from our recent shoot: a sweltering day in Shanghai, Yu Shuxin in a blue floral maxi dress, wearing white sneakers, sitting fresh and breezy in front of you, chatting away with her signature soft, slightly coquettish voice.

She’s like a chilled tangerine peel red bean dessert in the midst of a bitter summer—not overwhelmingly sweet, but just enough to make you smile and relax. That subtle coolness she brings is much like the little surprises she constantly gives off—gentle, but pleasantly unexpected.

Before interviewing Yu Shuxin, we honestly couldn’t quite figure it out: Why would a young actress—already with several solid acting credits and recognized performances—want to join a girl group?

But for a free-spirited Sagittarius like her, there’s no such thing as playing it safe. To her, gaining a new identity means exploring a new path—each title she takes on is not some separate offshoot, but a branch that grows from the same vibrant, living being: Yu Shuxin herself.

In the world of girl groups, Yu Shuxin has also managed to shake up some of the so-called “standards.” She speaks her mind. She doesn’t shy away from criticism or skepticism. Her face seems born to spawn viral reaction memes…

And during our conversation, OK! discovered something else: there was almost nothing off-limits with her. That openness took us by surprise. For example, in today’s climate where numbers and traffic are often met with suspicion, she still says—without hesitation—that she hopes her roles get noticed, that people talk about her, and that she can trend on the hot search.

For every step she’s taken, this “big-hearted” Yu Shuxin seems to know exactly what she’s doing.
“I don’t know how far I’ll go,” she says. “I just do my best.”

There’s something wonderfully romantic about waiting to find—and fully immerse yourself in—what you truly love. After all, we don’t measure personal worth by results alone.

Still, we can’t help but hope this sweet and sincere Yu Shuxin will, just as she sings,
“Face the ever-changing world, and clear every level with ease.”
