Yu Shuxin isn’t afraid of being called “shallow.”

Yu Shuxin’s brand of optimism is a gift in itself. In a world where people often expect those in the public eye—those constantly “gazed upon”—to carry a certain depth of pain and relentless self-reflection, she breaks the mold. She sidesteps that trap with ease. Yes, she can be profound, but she doesn’t feel the need to always be. Instead, she moves through life with a bright, unbothered energy, confidently embracing the simple, even “shallow,” joys—without apology.

A typical day for Regular Yu Shuxin probably looks something like this: waking up naturally with no alarm, enjoying a delicious meal, clearing out her online shopping cart, followed by a massage, an ear-cleaning session, and binge-watching dramas. To elaborate—“eating something delicious” means not having to think about calories or carbs. “I eat whatever I want, order whatever takeout I feel like,” she says. As for dramas, she catches up on all the current hits, chiming in with the comment section, swooning over the dreamy male leads with a few loud “omo”s (Korean for “oh my god”). The only catch? Days like that are rare—no more than 15 in the past year. Most of the time, Yu Shuxin lives not as “Regular Yu,” but as Celebrity Yu.

And life as Celebrity Yu Shuxin is a very different story. First rule? Discipline. Between magazine shoots, filming dramas, attending events, and performing concerts, she keeps one rule front of mind: “Of course I have to look pretty.” At online concert rehearsals, even chugging water makes her anxious—what if her face gets puffy? On set, castmates have observed her late-night eating habits: she skips carbs and settles for high-protein fish snacks when hunger strikes. This magazine shoot? Just days before she starts filming a new drama. She’s already worried: What if I’ve rested too well lately and haven’t slimmed down in time for day one? In her upcoming series Love Between Fairy and Devil, she has quite a few wirework scenes. But more than the height or the feeling of weightlessness, what she dreads most is this: “Hanging in the air makes the flesh on your face sag.”
