Personality Always Wins

Yu Shuxin is like a little fairy in the entertainment industry—she always shows the truest version of herself to the world. The first time she trended online, she said, “Other than being happy, I honestly didn’t know what else to feel.” Naturally lively and cheerful, she’s given her own spin—an almost complimentary definition—to the word “dramatic.” “This is who I am. This is my personality. It hasn’t changed after all these years.”

To Yu Shuxin, this kind of personality is simply a “reaction that’s a little different from most people.” Off-camera, she’s exactly the same as she is on-screen: straightforward, endearing, and always speaking her mind. “I never try to be someone else—I only know how to be myself.” You could call this rare ability to wear her heart on her sleeve and face sharp scrutiny with ease a kind of emotional insensitivity. But beneath that so-called insensitivity lies real resilience, courage, talent, and passion.

When Yu Shuxin was 20 years old, she visited a film set to see a friend who was working as an actor—and that visit marked the beginning of her solo journey into the industry. She looked around the set and said, “Oh, so this is what acting is like? I can do this too.” The confidence in her expression left no trace of a joke.

Fueled by dreams of an acting career, Yu Shuxin began gathering all the information she could on her own. On one occasion, after adding an assistant director on WeChat, she boldly messaged, “I think I’d be a great fit for your second female lead.” Self-recommendation was her forte. Even so, for a newcomer like her, rejection was inevitable. “Back then, no one would even respond to me,” she recalled. “They probably thought something was wrong with me.”

In fact, the sentence Yu Shuxin has heard most throughout her life is “Xinxin, it’s such a shame if you don’t go into acting.” No matter where she was, she always seemed to draw everyone’s attention. Naturally expressive and eager to perform, she was seen by relatives and friends as a born little “drama queen”—in the most affectionate sense. Even outside the family circle, she could strike up a lively conversation with a stranger in under three minutes. That’s just her personality—she does whatever she thinks, says whatever she feels, without the slightest attempt to hide or hold back.

Not a Princess

The dazzling celebrities on TV were Yu Shuxin’s earliest impression of the entertainment world. When asked about her initial dream, she responds sincerely with a rhetorical question: “What little girl could resist that? Who wouldn’t be envious? ” She still remembers the moment she accidentally came across a video online of an idol girl group performing on stage. It was like a whole new world had opened up to her.

The bright stage lights and the girls’ beautiful outfits—everything glamorous and glittering—completely captivated her. “They were like a beam of light,” she says. “And I felt like I’d been struck by it.”

Later, when Yu Shuxin finally had the chance to join a girl group survival show, she was met with a chorus of voices—doubt, misunderstanding, and even sarcasm. “It felt like no one around me supported the idea, aside from my company and my parents.”

But instead of being shaken by the noise, Yu Shuxin stood firm and made up her mind: “There’s no way I’m going to let them sway what I truly believe—I’ll prove myself. Just wait and see.” Her upbringing taught her independence. From kindergarten through college, boarding school was the norm, and she got used to figuring things out on her own—solving problems, making decisions, and standing by them.

In the end, time proved Yu Shuxin right. Through the show, she allowed the public to see a more authentic, more well-rounded version of herself. “Besides acting, I have a lot of other strengths. I can sing and dance—maybe not perfectly—but I’m always willing to drop everything and take on things that seem impossible.”

Q: Everyone knows you for your bubbly and cheerful personality—how have you come to view the public’s perception of you over the years?
A: I take in the good comments, and as for the bad ones… I probably forget them right after reading.

Q: What do you do when you’re working with someone who’s more cold and reserved?
A: It depends. If that’s just their personality, I’ll match their vibe and stay quiet so they don’t feel uncomfortable. But if they’re doing it on purpose—then I just ignore them.

Q: As a public figure, what kind of influence do you hope to have on today’s youth?
A: I wouldn’t call it “influence,” really. I just hope that when people see me, they feel happy—and that’s enough for me.

Q: From the beginning until now, people have witnessed your growth. In your professional work, what do you think has improved the most? And what would you say is your unique strength?
A: My singing and dancing have definitely improved the most compared to before. As for my strength—I’d say I have a short memory. I forget things easily, even when I’m upset or angry, so I bounce back quickly and stay happy most of the time.

Q: What kind of feedback do you most hope to receive from fans and the public?
A: That I’m skinny—haha—and that I’m a good actress, and beautiful~

Q: If you had to describe the real Yu Shuxin in three words, what would they be?
A: Happy, genuine, and free.

Q: You’ve been through intense training before, and even now, you’re juggling acting with shoots. Do you ever feel overwhelmed?
A: I’m not someone who feels a lot of pressure. Once I say, “I’m so stressed,” it kind of just goes away.

Q: Even when filming starts early, you still squeeze in time to practice singing and dancing. Why push yourself so hard?
A: I just can’t sit still. And if the work is there, I need to get it done—that’s how I live up to the people who are rooting for me.

That day, Yu Shuxin was dealing with an allergic reaction, and her skin wasn’t in the best condition—everyone on set held their breath in quiet concern. But the moment she stepped into view, it was as if the heavy gray air instantly turned into pink cotton candy—light, sweet, and soft. And with her came a voice as crisp as a candy wafer.

That feeling was impossible to ignore—one of enchantment, delight, intensity, and sweetness all at once…

Gripping the Code to Inner Ease

Looking back over a year ago, Yu Shuxin shot to the top of the trending charts with a single word—“Wow”—and instantly became the center of attention. Of course, that spotlight brought with it a flood of opinions. Some viewers found her a bit theatrical, while others wholeheartedly embraced her rare authenticity, praising her as “finally, someone in the entertainment industry who dares to be unapologetically real.”
