“What does a girl group look like?”

01: Nine Questions for Girl Groups

The core of talent shows is shifting toward a more inclusive, merit-based vision of girl groups.

Correspondingly, while the standards for what defines a girl group are constantly debated, no universally accepted answer has ever emerged.

In COSMO’s creative short film featuring the top nine contestants, we visualize these standards through the lens of future idols. We pose nine questions—about idols, girl groups, talent shows, and even fans of these shows—to get closer to the true selves of these young women.

1. Is the persona I present really who I am?
2. Can I stop? Am I allowed to pause?
3. Must I hide my emotions?
4. A life measured in calories—does it mean restraint or pleasure?
5. In the age of traffic and numbers, do data define all of me?
6. Can I be the judge of my own beauty?
7. Becoming an idol—does it bring me closer to or further from my true self?
8. Do you want to know more of my secrets, or let me keep them to myself?
9. In what way will I be remembered?

Each girl has her own answer. They cast aside their scripted personas, break the rules of expression, embrace their own beauty, protect their inner worlds, and break free from formulas—choosing instead to express their dreams in more powerful ways. They are in the midst of growth, quietly transforming. Full of vitality, they radiate an energy that inspires those around them.

02: Metamorphosis

There may be templates for facial expressions on stage, but in essence, following them only leads to being labeled. If you want to appear more authentic in front of the camera, the best way is to break free from the mold.

Black and white can sometimes highlight emotion more effectively than color.
It draws the viewer’s attention to the subject’s face, creating a sense of observation and intimacy.

For these nine girls, whether facing the camera or turning away from it, such close-up shots are undoubtedly a challenge—the task being to reveal different sides of themselves.

So, how did they perform?

The wind lifts Yu Shuxin’s fluffy hair, making one almost mistake her for a wealthy woman on a beach vacation (a playful rhyme).

The single highlight on her cheekbone adds depth to her expression—you know, a true “reactioner” never follows the rules, moving freely with her feelings.

Highlight: Xin Xin has slimmed down so much that her shoulder blades and collarbones are visible.

03: Bloom Instantly

Facing challenges, transforming, and being reborn—until they finally bloom, each girl is like a unique and distinctive fragrance.

Yu Shuxin is like the rich scent of a red rose—like walking into a dewy rose valley, soft yet captivating. Yu Shuxin herself is like a rose: delicate but passionate, vibrant, and remarkably strong. The endless energy she radiates comes from her kind heart and good upbringing.

And blooming always starts from within. Personality, talent, and charm are all ways of expressing oneself. Naturally, makeup, clothing, and hairstyles are also important expressions of personal aesthetics. Just as some people love short hair, others prefer long hair.

Yu Shuxin’s long hair enhances her gentle and innocent aura.

Whether as a girl group or as individual girls, they are the most vibrant faces of this spring-to-summer season.

Before officially becoming a girl group, amid the buzz and attention, they are all striving to become their true selves. They bloom in the present moment, without dwelling on the past or worrying about the future.
